12 Big Brands That Use WordPress and Why You Should Too

If you’re not familiar with it, WordPress is an open source (i.e., free) content management system (CMS). The primary benefit of using some sort of CMS for your website is you can go in and update it yourself anytime you like—no programmer needed.

WordPress is the perfect website solution for remodelers of all sizes because it’s versatile, easy to use and flexible. And best of all it’s incredibly inexpensive.

The problem is that many remodelers think the low price tag equals low-quality. That’s just flat out wrong. In fact, WordPress powers over 22% of every website on the planet!

If that’s not enough of a testimonial …

Surprised?

It seems ridiculous to think that a giant like Facebook, with thousands of programmers on staff, would use WordPress. But it just goes to show you … you don’t have to reinvent the wheel, no matter how big you are.

A Clarification

Do not confuse WordPress with WordPress.com! The dot com is a commercial website where you can host a free website with limitations. It runs the open source WordPress software. If you setup your website there, the URL would look like this: yourcompany.wordpress.com. This is a no-no.

You can get your WordPress website hosted anywhere for a few dollars per month. GoDaddy.com and HostGator.com both have very low hosting fees (less than $10 per month), and they even install the WordPress software for you.

Having fun

The best part about WordPress is how much freedom you have. There are well over 2,500 WordPress themes and more than 30,000 plugins that are completely free!  If you’re not familiar with these terms, a theme is the design and layout of the website. A plugin is a software module that expands the functionality of your WordPress theme. So, for example, say you want to add a calendar of events to your website; there’s a plugin for that! (many of them actually).

Of course, if you’re really feeling fancy you can buy premium themes for as little as $35. Themeforest.net is one of my personal favorites.

Help is all around

Because WordPress powers more than 22% of the world’s websites, there’s plenty of people able to help for very low fees. Dozens of websites like codeable.io can match you with WordPress experts to help you do anything from installing a plugin to complete customization.

A word of warning

It’s not all butterflies and kisses with WordPress. For one thing, the open source platform means anyone with a little knowledge can create a plugin. So you need to watch out for the junk. (Fortunately built-in rating system helps you make informed decisions).

Also, the massive versatility makes it more difficult to use than a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) website builder, like Wix or Weebly.

But in the end, a slightly larger learning curve is well worth it in my opinion. Today’s business world moves lightning fast. Being nimble is a huge advantage and having complete control over your website is a big part of the nimble pie.

What about you?
