The Remodelers

Guide to Business

The Most Overlooked Marketing Opportunity in Your Business

You spend countless hours building your brand—so why let it fall flat the moment you walk out the door?

Vacation season is in full swing, and for many remodelers, that means setting an out-of-office reply and heading off to recharge. But here’s the thing: your out-of-office message is one of the most overlooked—and easiest—ways to make a lasting impression.

Most replies sound something like this:

“I will be out of the office until August 18th with limited access to email. If this is urgent, contact John at john@acmeremodeling.com.”

It’s cold, robotic, and forgettable. Worse, it undermines all the work you’ve done to create a personal, trustworthy brand. And let’s be honest—unless you’re hiking Everest, you do have access to email.

Every customer touchpoint matters. That includes even the tiniest details, like an auto-reply. This is a golden opportunity to show your personality, build connection, and stand out from the crowd.

Try this: instead of “Out of Office” in the subject line, go with something more engaging:

  • “Oops, I forgot to tell you I’m away!”

  • “This might be the fastest email reply you’ll ever get.”

In the message, be clear about when you’ll return—but add a buffer. If you’re back Monday, say you’ll respond by Wednesday. This sets expectations you can actually meet (or beat).

And don’t just provide a backup contact—make it memorable:

“If it’s truly urgent, please email stopspendingtimewithyourkids@acmeremodeling.com and I’ll respond ASAP.”

It’s lighthearted but clear: you’re unplugged, and it better be important.

Finally, offer something extra—link to a podcast episode, a free guide, or even a funny video. It’s a subtle, smart way to keep people engaged with your brand while you’re away.

“Need something great to listen to while I’m gone? Check out our podcast at PowerTipsPodcast.com or TheTimFowlerShow.com.”

These little touches go a long way. They humanize your company, reinforce your brand, and yes, even make people smile. In a sea of generic auto-replies, yours can be the one they remember—and maybe even share.

Taking time off? Great. Just don’t let your brand take a break too.
