I love baseball.
It’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. And every time I drive from my home in Western Connecticut down to our office in Maryland, I pass by Ripken Stadium. No matter what else is going on, it always brings a smile to my face. It reminds me why I love the game—and, oddly enough, why I love remodeling, too.
Baseball is often called a game of inches. So is remodeling.
You don’t win either one with a single big swing. Success comes from a series of small, smart decisions made over time. Planning. Execution. Adjustments. Both demand teamwork, timing, and trust.
In baseball, everyone knows their role. The pitcher doesn’t wonder what the shortstop is doing. They’ve practiced the play. They know the signals. They trust each other. A good remodeling team works the same way. Designers, project managers, carpenters, and trade partners each play a position. When they follow the same game plan and execute well, the job flows. When they don’t, it falls apart.
Both baseball and remodeling are full of unpredictable moments. A bad hop. A client change. A delay you didn’t see coming. Great teams don’t panic, they adapt. They understand that momentum shifts, and that you have to stay in the game. You don’t quit after a bad inning. You reset, adjust, and come back stronger.
Baseball also teaches the value of small wins. A bunt. A stolen base. A well-placed ground ball. These moments may not make the highlight reel, but they move the game forward. In remodeling, it’s the clean jobsite, the client update, the extra call to a trade partner. Not glamorous. But effective.
And here’s something that always sticks with me: the best hitters in baseball fail seven out of ten times. That’s part of the game. In remodeling, even great companies run into issues. What separates the pros from the rest is how they respond. Do they learn? Do they own it? Do they keep going?
That’s the game I love. Whether I’m watching baseball or walking a jobsite, it’s about showing up, playing hard, supporting the team, and doing the little things right.
And every time I pass Ripken Stadium, I think about all of that. The discipline. The craft. The heart. That’s what makes a great team—on the field and in this industry.
